The Athletes
Despite the NTIS being a relatively new and small organisation, it has assisted athletes to an international medal-winning standard. Amongst those who have reached the heights of international excellence are:
Nova Peris - Gold medallist at the Atlanta Olympics (hockey) and 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpar (athletics).
Stephen Holt - Gold Medallist at 1998 Commonwealth Games and Bronze Medallist at 2000 Olympic Games in Hockey.
Judith Green (OAM) - Gold Medallist at 2000 Paralympics and world record holder for 200m breaststroke in Swimming.
As of March 2003, more than 535 athletes have been supported by the NTIS in its short history. The NTIS can proudly boast its support of:
- six Olympians,
- eight world champions,
- eight Paralympians,
- seven Commonwealth Games representatives,
- 28 national champions,
- 84 Australian representatives and
- 17 AIS scholarship holders.
An incredible achievement given Northern Territory's small population!
A Centre of ExcellenceThe NTIS has rapidly gained recognition as a centre of training and sporting excellence.
In 1997 the NTIS became recognised by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) as the National Heat Training and Acclimatisation Centre. The NTIS now has a strong association with the Northern Territory University to conduct further research and development in this area.
In 1999 the NTIS was recognised by the Australian Olympic Committee as an Official Olympic Training Centre and was heavily invovled in assisting East Timor, Federated States of Micronesia and Nepal athletes in their Olympic preparation.
National Teams and squads are now utilising the NTIS facilities to prepare for competition, with Australian Hockey and Athletics having used the centre for preparation in the lead up to the Sydney Olympics.
